Bendigo gold heritage & the Great Stupa

Full day · ~10 hours

Bendigo packs three worlds into one day: the boom-town architecture and underground mine of the gold rush, Australia's oldest Chinese community at the Golden Dragon Museum and Joss House, and — just out of town — the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion, home of the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace. A heritage day and a pilgrimage day in one, and a favourite with visiting parents.

Why it's famous

Discover Bendigo & Great Stupa.

Gold was discovered at Bendigo in the mid-1800s, sparking one of the first mass migrations to Australia. People came from across the globe seeking their fortune, and their legacy lives on in the city's grand Victorian architecture, ornate fountains, gardens and heritage trams — and underground at Central Deborah, where 929 kg of gold was once extracted.

Among those prospectors was a large Chinese community. The Golden Dragon Museum, opened in 1991 on part of the old Chinatown site, tells their story with a collection of some 30,000 objects including imperial processional dragons, alongside the Yi Yuan Gardens. The Bendigo Joss House Temple, opened in 1871, is one of the few remaining temples of its kind in Australia.

Just outside town at Myers Flat stands the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion — 50 metres square at its base and nearly 50 metres high, the largest stupa in the Western world, built to the design of the Gyantse Kumbum in Tibet. Inside sits the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace, the largest Buddha carved from gem-quality jade, which toured 20 countries before coming home to Bendigo in 2018.

Common questions

Good to know.

Is the Great Stupa suitable for a family pilgrimage visit?
Yes — it's an active place of worship open to all faiths, with gardens, a gift shop and easy parking. Allow 1.5–2 hours; we time the day around it if it's your main stop.
Can we do this as a temple-focused day instead?
Absolutely — pair the stupa with the Joss House and skip the mine. Tell us at booking and we'll re-sequence.
Is Bendigo too far with young kids?
It's one of the easier regional days — 90 minutes each way on smooth freeway, and every stop is stroller-friendly except the underground mine.
