Snow day — Lake Mountain & Marysville
Full day · ~11 hours · June–September
Seeing snow for the first time is a rite of passage for visiting parents and kids — and Lake Mountain is the closest snow to Melbourne. We handle the alpine road, the chains and the parking so you just play: toboggan runs, snowman lawns and snow-gum trails. Marysville village and Steavenson Falls round out the day before a warm drive home.
Why it's famous
Discover Snow day.
Lake Mountain Alpine Resort is roughly two hours from the Melbourne CBD through the Yarra Valley, which makes it one of the easiest places to see real snow on a day trip. In winter it is all about play rather than downhill skiing: three ticketed toboggan runs, open snow-play areas for snowmen and snowball fights, snowshoe walks and over 25 km of groomed cross-country ski trails.
The drive up is part of the magic. The road climbs the Black Spur through towering mountain ash and tree ferns to Marysville, a village tucked in a valley just below the mountain, about 90 minutes from Melbourne. It is the base camp for the snow — coffee, bakeries, a famous lolly shop and chain and gear hire before the final climb.
Just outside the village, Steavenson Falls plunges 84 metres and flows all year round. An easy, level 700 m walk leads to a viewing platform at the base of one of Victoria's highest waterfalls — a favourite with visitors since the 1860s and a lovely, peaceful end to a snow day.

Common questions
Good to know.
- Is snow guaranteed?
- In July–August almost always; June and September depend on the season. We check the resort's snow cam before your day and tell you honestly — you can move the date at no cost if there's no snow.
- Do we need special clothes?
- Waterproof jackets, gloves and boots make the day. You can hire everything in Marysville on the way up — allow ~30 minutes.
- Why not Mount Buller?
- Buller has skiing but it's a much longer, dearer day. For snow play and first-snow photos, Lake Mountain gives you more time in the snow and less in the car. Want Buller anyway? We quote it on request.
